USP Leads Latin America in 2026 Shanghai Ranking as US and UK Universities Dominate Global List
The University of São Paulo (USP) remains the top Latin American institution in the 2026 Shanghai Ranking, placed within the world’s top 150. American and British universities continue to occupy the highest positions, while Brazil contributes a total of 14 universities to the top-1000 list. France improves its standing, entering the top ten nations represented.

The latest Shanghai Ranking, released on 15 August 2026, confirms the University of São Paulo (USP) as the highest-ranked university in Latin America, positioning it somewhere within the 150-best universities worldwide. The ranking, compiled by the independent Shanghai Ranking Consultancy, evaluates institutions primarily on research-related metrics such as Nobel and Fields medals, highly-cited researchers, and publications in leading journals like *Nature* and *Science*. ## Global Leaders Remain Predominantly US and UK American universities continue to dominate the top tier of the list. Harvard retains the number-one spot, followed by Stanford and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). From the United Kingdom, Cambridge and Oxford appear at fourth and seventh places respectively. The methodology’s focus on research output means teaching quality is not directly assessed, a point that has drawn repeated criticism from academics who argue the ranking overlooks core educational performance. ## Brazil’s Presence Across the Top-1000 Beyond USP, thirteen other Brazilian institutions feature among the world’s top-thousand universities. The University of São Paulo State (Unesp) falls in the 301-400 bracket, while the University of Campinas (Unicamp) is placed between 401-500. Three federal universities - Minas Gerais (UFMG), Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) and Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) - occupy the 501-600 range. Further down, the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC) and the Federal University of São Paulo (Unifesp) sit in the 701-800 band. The Federal University of Paraná (UFPR), Federal University of São Carlos (UFSCar), Federal University of Viçosa (UFV) and the University of Brasília (UnB) are listed between 801-900, while the Federal University of Ceará (UFC) and the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE) round out the 901-1000 segment. Chinese universities hold the largest overall representation, with 234 institutions in the top-1000, compared with 187 from the United States. However, the United States maintains a clear advantage in the top-100, where 37 American universities outrank 16 Chinese counterparts. ## France Improves Its Position France’s representation also grew, with 27 French institutions now included in the top-1000, moving the country up to the tenth most-represented nation. According to the French Ministry of Higher Education, the improved showing reflects stronger scientific research and greater international visibility. Paris-Saclay remains the highest-ranked French university at 13th globally, making it the top non-American, non-British institution in the ranking. Paris Sciences et Lettres (PSL) and Paris Cité advanced to the 33rd and 57th positions respectively, while the Sorbonne slipped to 55th place. The Shanghai Ranking’s emphasis on research indicators continues to shape perceptions of university prestige worldwide, even as debates persist over its relevance to teaching quality and broader educational outcomes.
