Wellesley College announced a tuition-free program for students from families with incomes below $200,000, starting fall 2027

Wellesley College announced on Wednesday it will provide free tuition to students from families earning less than $200,000 annually. The program, called the Wellesley Tuition Promise, will take effect for incoming and returning students starting in the fall of 2027.

President Paula Johnson stated the move aligns with the college's mission. "Wellesley’s mission of educating women of all socioeconomic backgrounds is more important than ever," Johnson said. She added that the promise aims to ensure cost is not an obstacle to a Wellesley education.

The tuition discount will be applied automatically to eligible students. Their tuition bills will be covered entirely by grants, according to the college. Wellesley, a women's liberal arts college in Massachusetts with 2,300 students, has historically relied on its endowment for financial aid.

Funding and Program Scope

The new program will be funded using money made available from changes to college endowment tax rules. This financial shift allows the institution to expand its aid offerings significantly.

However, the Wellesley Tuition Promise covers tuition only. It does not extend to cost-of-living expenses, housing, food, or student fees. The college estimates that even students receiving free tuition may still need to pay up to $26,000 annually for these additional costs.

Comparative Landscape

Wellesley joins a growing list of institutions creating similar promise programs. Many colleges have announced tuition-free initiatives for families with incomes between $75,000 and $200,000. The specifics of what these programs cover, however, vary widely.

InstitutionIncome Threshold for Free TuitionAdditional Covered Costs
Washington & Lee UniversityLess than $150,000Free room & board for families under $75,000
Wellesley CollegeLess than $200,000Tuition only; room, board, and fees not included

As the table shows, some programs offer more comprehensive support. Wellesley's offering is among those focused solely on tuition relief.

Impact and Eligibility

T. Peaches Valdes, Wellesley’s dean of admission and financial aid, emphasized the program's broad reach. Valdes said the program will remove a financial barrier for students from all backgrounds. This includes the roughly 86 percent of American households with annual incomes below $200,000.

"These students come to Wellesley because they want a rigorous education, and because they want to make a difference in the world," Valdes stated. "For an increasing number of students, Wellesley’s Tuition Promise will make that possible."

The announcement positions Wellesley within a national trend of institutions using financial aid policies to improve accessibility. The program's automatic application process is designed to simplify access for qualifying families. The college's statement provided all details of the new initiative.
