Venmo Now Accepts Tuition at Some Colleges

PayPal Holdings and its Venmo peer-to-peer payment tool have partnered with three college-payment technology firms to enable tuition payments at a handful of institutions. The move, announced in a press release on Wednesday, marks the first time the payment services are directly integrated with a school’s payment portal.

Integration Details

PayPal said the new arrangement will let students and parents pay tuition using Venmo or PayPal at schools that use Illumia, Nelnet Campus Commerce or TouchNet Information Systems. The three firms already serve thousands of universities and colleges across the United States. According to a PayPal spokesperson, the integration requires the payment options to appear on the institutions’ formal checkout pages, ensuring a seamless transaction process.

The partnership also supports cross-border payments, a feature that some schools are already live with. PayPal’s spokesperson explained that the technology must be available on the official checkout pages for Venmo or PayPal to be used for commercial transactions.

Schools Participating

Some of the colleges that have activated the new payment options include Butler University, Kansas State University and Michigan State University. These institutions are among the first to offer students and parents the convenience of using a familiar mobile payment app for tuition.

Strategic Context

PayPal’s expansion into higher-education payments follows a broader strategy that began under former CEO Alex Chriss, who noted that his sons used Venmo while in college. The company has been working to broaden the use cases for its payment platform, and the current integration is a continuation of that effort.

Under new CEO Enrique Lores, who took the helm in March, PayPal has continued to push into education. Last year, the company announced it would begin processing payments for the Big Ten and Big 12 collegiate sports conferences, a move aimed at handling more student-athlete transactions and campus spending. PayPal also said it was eyeing additional services related to tuition payments.

The partnership with Illumia, Nelnet and TouchNet provides a pathway for PayPal and Venmo to reach more students and parents, offering a convenient alternative to traditional payment methods. As the payment landscape evolves, the integration may set a precedent for other institutions to adopt mobile payment solutions for tuition and fees.
