Fuvest's New Mandatory Books Elevate Interpretative Requirements for Candidates
The Fuvest has introduced new mandatory books for the 2026-2028 entrance exams, prioritizing female literary production and requiring candidates to demonstrate a higher level of interpretative skills.

The Fuvest has announced changes to its mandatory book list for the 2026-2028 entrance exams, with a focus on female literary production from Brazil, Portugal, and Mozambique. The new list includes nine works of Portuguese language literature from different periods and genres, such as novels, short stories, and poetry.
Introduction to the New Book List
The diversity of the new book list demonstrates an intention to broaden the reading repertoire of students and stimulate the analysis of different narrative, linguistic, and aesthetic resources. The list includes works that require students to have a well-structured preparation, with two new books that are considered more challenging and experimental.
According to Danislau, a professor of literature and Portuguese language, the two new books are "São dois livros de leitura desafiadora, experimentais, vanguardistas" (two books of challenging, experimental, and avant-garde reading). The books are "Geografia" by Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen and "A Paixão Segundo G.H." by Clarice Lispector.
Analysis of the New Books
"Geografia" is considered a more sophisticated book than the previous work by Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen, "O Cristo Cigano". Tatiana Mascarenhas, a professor of literature, analyzes that "De um livro mais curto e que apresenta uma espécie de narrativa, seguimos para um livro mais sofisticado do ponto de vista de leitura, de interpretação" (from a shorter book that presents a kind of narrative, we move to a more sophisticated book from the point of view of reading and interpretation).
"A Paixão Segundo G.H." by Clarice Lispector is also considered a challenging book that demands time and reflection. Danislau points out that "Não é um livro de fruição imediata, mas de leitura lenta. É uma obra que demanda tempo" (it's not a book of immediate pleasure, but of slow reading. It's a work that demands time).
Comparison of the New Books
The two new books can be compared in terms of their complexity and requirements for interpretation. The following table summarizes the main characteristics of the two books:
Both books are considered open to different interpretations, inviting the reader to construct meanings and not offering definitive explanations. Mascarenhas analyzes that "Nem tudo a gente vai ter resposta. Podem significar muitas coisas. Como é, muitas vezes, nem toda literatura tem uma resposta fechada" (not everything will have an answer. They can mean many things. As it is, many times, not all literature has a closed answer).
Preparation and Study Tips
To prepare for the entrance exams, students are advised to adapt their study routine to the new book list. Mascarenhas recommends that students "rabiscar os livros, escrever, pensar e, mais do que isso, conversar sobre" (scribble in the books, write, think, and, more than that, discuss them). Danislau also suggests that students use supporting texts to facilitate their understanding of the two books. "Orientar-se, previamente, para que o estudante não fique com a sensação de que não está entendendo nada das duas obras" (orient themselves previously, so that the student does not feel that they do not understand anything about the two works).
